Spotlight On
A School Board Trustee
May 2, 2025

Few roles are as simultaneously vital and misunderstood as that of the school board trustee. The reality of serving on a school board in today’s climate has never been more complex or demanding.   JCSD#1 Board of Trustees, alongside countless other school districts across Wyoming and beyond, grapple with a multitude of challenges: dwindling budgets, escalating community expectations, and the ever-evolving landscape of education.

The position is often perceived as wielding significant power and influence.  But does it really? This feature puts a spotlight on the role of a school board trustee, exploring the misconceptions that surround the position, and the real work at hand.   We asked Lynette Fox, Vice-Chair of JCSD#1 Board of Trustees, to pull back the curtain on this crucial, yet often thankless, role, and explain the work and challenges facing our local school district and the Board of Trustees.

JCSD#1 Board of Trustees has 9 members.  At the last election in November 2024, five seats were open, with five candidates standing, one of which was incumbent, Lynette Fox, the other four had not previously served on JCSD#1 Board of Trustees.

Recently two of those newly elected trustees have resigned their position, leaving two open seats on the board with a term to November 2026.
To fill these vacant seats, JCSD#1 Board of Trustees has asked for letters of interest from the community.  The applications will be reviewed on Wednesday 7th May at the regular Work Session, and it is expected recommendations of appointment will be made at the regular Board meeting on Monday 12th May .
Application submission deadline is Monday 5th May.
