Is Wyoming Going Nuclear?
May 16, 2025
There is nothing like the word “nuclear” to spark strong reactions. Wyoming is grappling with how to boost it’s economy and diversify energy production. With its rich uranium reserves, the state has caught the eye of Radiant Nuclear who want to bring new production technology to Bar Nunn.
Local elected officials, Bill Allemand HD58, Jayme Lien HD38 and Tony Locke HD35 offer varying perspectives on the challenges and opportunities tied to the initiative and Wyoming’s broader push for energy diversification and rural economic growth.
Find out more about the the nuts and bolts of nuclear energy production as well as the potential benefits, the concerns, and the potential broader implications of this type of project from this recording of a meeting hosted by the Republican Women’s Freedom Alliance in Buffalo WY on Thursday 16th May, 2025.
With abundant uranium reserves and a strong commitment to an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy, Wyoming is uniquely positioned to become a national leader in ‘next-generation’ nuclear energy. In fact, the state already leads the country in uranium production, giving it both the resources and the momentum to be at the cutting edge of nuclear technology.
The nation’s first sodium-cooled, advanced nuclear reactor is under construction in Kemmerer WY on the site of a retiring coal-fired power plant. This Natrium reactor represents a notable step forward in nuclear technology with an emphasis on safer, smaller, and more cost-effective methods than traditional reactors.
